The Chinese Friendship Association of Portland (CFAP) held a large-scale “2025 World No Tobacco Day Health Expo” to vigorously promote smoking cessation
(Reported by Wang Xing)
Initiated by Chinese Friendship Association of Portland (CFAP), East County Community Health and jointly participated by the Oregon Health System and community organizations, the “2025 World No Tobacco Day Health Expo” kicked off on June 7 at the outdoor plaza of the Fubon Supermarket.
At 10:30 a.m., the opening ceremony of the fair officially began. During the ceremony, Iris Zhao, the project director of the CFAP, presented the outline and, together with Lung Wah, director of the East County Community Health, TriMet representative, and Rep Dr. Tran’s legal assistant Celeste Baird, jointly dot the eyes of three lions for the CFAP Youth Lion Dance Team to kick off the lion dance ceremony. The scene was filled with the sound of gongs and drums as the lions danced in a festive atmosphere. Attendees and volunteers moved rhythmically to the strong beats of Chinese music, disco, and modern dance, with people of different ages dancing together to celebrate the opening of World No Tobacco Day.’ Volunteer Luo Hongge performed on the traditional Chinese instrument, Guzheng, for the visitors. Jorie from the Youth Council of the CFAP hosted the opening ceremony.
“World No Tobacco Day” was created by the World Health Organization in 1987 and officially launched in 1988, designated as May 31 each year. Oregon also launched its activities in the same year. This initiative aims to draw global attention to the prevalence of tobacco use and its deadly effects, and is carried out each year with different themes, gradually becoming a widely recognized consensus within society. The CFAP joined Oregon’s “World No Tobacco Day” activities in 2023. Over the years, this organization has remained committed to its mission, actively playing the role of grassroots organizations, and consistently participating in and initiating this significant and challenging promotional campaign. Through various methods such as site visits, setting up exhibits, surveys, seminars, and expos, they have patiently and thoroughly conducted targeted advocacy and guidance for key occupations and populations, achieving certain results. In early May this year, in preparation for the upcoming ‘World No Tobacco Day 2025’, the CFAP began early preparations, contacting relevant government and health agencies in Oregon to jointly formulate plans for the promotion and hosting of the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ exhibition; organizing relevant community organizations, arranging venues for the exhibition, and setting up promotional service points and booths; recruiting community and youth volunteer teams; continuously improving the structure and details of the exhibition, laying a solid foundation for a successful event. Today, we gather here to jointly launch the community ‘2025 World No Tobacco Day Health Expo’. This year’s ‘World No Tobacco Day’ has the theme ‘Bright Products, Dark Intentions: Unmasking the Appeal, revealing the true nature of nicotine’s harm behind tobacco. From the meticulously designed, colorful packaging to the sweet flavors of added ingredients, the bright exterior and sweet taste create a false sense of safety, covering up the brutal nature of its deadly harm; once addicted, individuals find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle, difficult to break free from.
The Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), relevant insurance agencies, East County Community, 211info, TriMet, Multnomah County Library, Asian Health and Service Center, Ride Connection, and Oregon Paid Leave, set up booths at the expo site. The on-site activities were diverse and eye-catching. The Multnomah County Library gave away books and videos for free to visitors; artist Lai Limei and her daughter painted beautiful “face paintings” for children; KY photographers offered free family portraits against colorful backdrops featuring themes like “Quitting Smoking Leads to a Better Life” and the vibrant animal world backdrop; the 88 Barbershop provided free haircuts on site, while DJ music and fitness activities attracted visitors of all ages.
Additionally, the event integrated a quiz with prizes for health knowledge winners, and delicious free food like pizza was available to visitors all day; student volunteers from several middle and high schools participated throughout the event, providing comprehensive service support. The event was lively and attracted a continuous stream of visitors. The expo was held in a warm atmosphere and concluded at 2 PM. According to preliminary statistics, over 300 visitors attended the event that day.
