On November 26th, the first Chinese Table Tennis Tournament was held at the Tigard Table Tennis Hall. The Hipseng Association and the Chinese Portland Friendship Association of Portland (CFAP) co-organized it.
Table tennis is still a favorite sport for both the new and older generation of Chinese Americans, and some tobacco users also like this activity very much. After discussing the details of the preparation and publicity of the competition with the chairman of the Hipseng Association, Zhen Zhongchun, and Zhou Huijing, we immediately began to start the preparation process. CFAP is responsible for arranging the trophies, reserving the venue, and preparing the promotional poster. The Hipseng Association donated $1,000 as a prize for the competition. At the same time, the two organizations jointly issued a public release to invite community members to participate in the tournament.
On the day of the competition, five table tennis tables have been reserved for the competition. Many players arrived at the venue two hours in advance to start practice. At the scene, the chief referee, Huang Burong, arranged for the players to draw to form each team. The competition adopted three rounds of two wins and a knockout system. The young players are full of energy, while the elders are playing with good experience and energy. After more than 2 hours of fierce competition, the senior group Weida Qian won the championship, Andrew Kung won the second place, and Weite Lu won the third place. Jayden Zhen won the junior group championship.
The OHA Tobacco Prevention program supported the competition. We tested the level of carbon monoxide in many tobacco users for free and promoted tobacco cessation to all players.
The tournament will continue to be held yearly to promote the development of table tennis, encourage young people to participate in this sport, and provide opportunities for tobacco users to play their favorite sports.
