We conducted both pre-assessments and post-assessments during the 2023 Startalk-CFAP Summer Chinese Camp which was held from July 10th to August 4th. A total of 60 students from kindergarten to 8th grade enrolled in the camp.
Pre-Assessment
- Format: a proficiency-based diagnostic assessment
- When: the first day of the camp
- Purposes: to assess students’ Chinese language proficiency level; and to adjust our curriculum to meet the students’ learning needs.
- Scoring: ACTFL’s rubrics of language proficiency standards.
- Results: the students’ oral skills were one level higher than their written skills. The following tables show that the students’ oral skills were at the “intermediate – Advanced” levels (red in the table) while the written skills were at the “Novice-Intermediate” levels (red in the table).
Post-Assessment
- Format: a performance-based summative assessment
- When: the end of the camp
- Purposes: to assess if students reached the learning goals at the end of the camp; and if they could perform what they have learned.
- Type: the post-assessments were conducted in three performance-based formats to assess students’ achievements: in-class exam, group performing a play, and idiom graphics.
A) In-class exam
Rubrics: ACTFL language proficiency standards, and the camp curriculum design including conversation, oral presentation, reading & writing.
Results: the following chart shows that, compared with the results of the pre-assessment, the students’ reading ability (gray in the chat) has been greatly improved and reached the same level as their oral ability although their writing ability (yellow in the chart) has also been improved, but not as greatly as the reading ability.
B) Performing a play
Each class wrote, rehearsed & performed a play at the final closing ceremony. The following phots show some plays. The left photo is the play “A Fox borrows Tiger’s Might”. The right one is the play “Cao Chong Weights the Elephant”.
C) Idiom graphics
Each student created his/her own graphics through drawing and text to present their understanding of the idiomatic stories they learned. The following graphics are samples of the students’ graphics. The left drawing is for the idiom “Lord Ye Loves Dragon”, and the right drawing is for the idiom “Cao Chong Weights the Elephant”.
