The curriculum design of our summer camp is to combine language learning and cultural knowledge. Language is a carrier of culture and is closely related to culture. Adhering to this philosophy, our summer camp integrates cultural learning into every activity and sets up a platform for children to “understand”, “experience” and “practice” the Chinese culture. In the calligraphy class, the students practice writing “Fu” (happiness) and auspicious words; in the origami class, the students learn to make red lanterns; in the dance class, the students practice playing the waist drum and experience the joyful rhythm of the Chinese nation; in the martial arts class, the students practiced the essence of Chinese martial arts “hard and soft”; in the handicraft class, the students learn to weave bracelets and turn hand ropes; in the ancient poem singing class, the students appreciate the poetic and pictorial beauty of rhythm in ancient Chinese poems through songs, dances, stories and painting. Idiom phrases are a special language form not found in other languages. After learning the idiom stories, students arrange the idiom stories into dramas to experience the wisdom of Chinese ancestors who developed these phrases over thousands of years. All students had opportunities to perform the idiom drama and other programs they learned from the summer camp for their families and the Chinese community at the closing ceremony.
